STUFFEE HELPERS NEEDED—DANVILLE

Stuffee needs friends to go with him to the Fifth Annual Children's Health and Safety Fair held in Lincoln Park, Danville. Our parish nurses helped out last year and they are asking again for help this year. Any help will be greatly appreciated. The time can be shared—you would only need to work an hour or two depending on how many volunteer.

Stuffee is a hand-crafted character who is approximately 7 feet tall. When opening his bright green zipper that goes down the front of him, his major abdominal organs can be shown as part of a fun-filled anatomy lesson. Colorful soft sculpture reproductions of lungs, heart, appendix, stomach and other organs are revealed by opening his bright green zipper. Stuffee's goal is to teach children about health, nutrition, and how their bodies work.

Over 2,000 children and families attend the fair each year. It is a delightful day of interactive activities for children.

Fifth Annual Children's Health and Safety Fair
July 27th, 2002
10 am - 4 pm
Lincoln Park, Danville

Please call Bev at 326-2583 or Nancy Gouty at 383-4602 for more information or to volunteer.

Parish News

COORDINATOR’S CORNER

The last weekend of class is two days away and once again we will see our group GROW as 18 nurses (including two guys, bringing our total of male parish nurses to 5J) join our ministry. I was privileged this month to give three retreats for parish nurses in Indianapolis, Marion, IN, and Silver Spring Maryland. How wonderful to see how parish nursing is LIVED in different regions.

Please note that our prayer list this month has several urgent needs and we would appreciate your placing these names on your congregational prayer chains.

I was fortunate to address a conference with Dr. Harold Koenig in Omaha last week on Spirituality Health & Medicine. It was great to meet the man whose works so many of us have read. We have two of his books available in our library if you are interested.

As you plan for the coming year, consider a church based prom education program. In my travels, I am often asked to tour facilities. The last two weeks I have been saddened by the number of teens in the ICU’s following prom accidents. Many abstinence/chastity speakers point out that prom is an extremely risky time for girls. Why not develop with your youth ministry teams a prom program that addresses safety, abstinence and reinforces faith-based values?

The names of our newest members are listed in this newsletter—please hold them in your hearts.

Blessings,

Faith

Tidbits of Research . . .

  • A recent study bolsters evidence that the systolic blood pressure reading is better than the diastolic number at predicting heart disease risk, even in middle-age patients. Hypertension (140/90 or higher) affects more than 50 million US adults. In the latest study published in Internal Medicine men with systolic readings of 160 or higher faced more than double the risk of dying from cardiovascular disease during an average follow-up of 14 years, compared with men whose systolic numbers were under 140.
  • Another study raises the provocative possibility that cholesterol-lowering drugs taken by millions of Americans can also ward off Alzheimer’s disease. The study found that high cholesterol levels appear to harm the brain and lead to mental decline and Alzheimer’s disease.
