COMMISSIONING CEREMONY

For many of our parish nurses a commissioning service was held by their church for them as a way to formally recognize their work in their congregation. As our program grows, we continue to get requests as to how these services are set up. Please e-mail (faith.roberts@carle.com) or call me (326-2683) with the details of your ceremony. The plan is to feature this information in an upcoming newsletter.

Thanks!

Parish News

COORDINATOR’S CORNER

Happy New Year! 2001 has arrived! Now let’s see how many checks I mess up before I get it straight in my mind J. On December 3rd our fall class was dedicated in a touching ceremony at Temple Baptist in Urbana. Fifteen out of seventeen pastors attended, as did many parish nurses. The ceremony and reception were organized by Bonnie Boswell, Karen McKinzie and Melissa Parks who are the parish nurses for Temple Baptist. Rev. Scott Boyd spoke glowingly of the work done by parish nurses and I had several pastors comment on how impressed they were by the ceremony.

HMA Health Ministries Association will hold it’s national conference in Cincinnati, Ohio June 18-20. Sandy Reifsteck and I attended two years ago in Atlanta and presented a poster session on our program and Sandy spoke also on the genesis of our course. Last year it was held in Texas and Sandy was again selected as a presenter and spoke on communication. This year since it is close to us, we would very much like to have a group attend. HMA is the professional organization for parish nurses, chaplains, social workers, ministers, etc.—anyone who is involved in a healing ministry. There are many breakout sessions and topics that would be of interest to you as a parish nurse. Feel free to call me at 326-2683 if this sounds like a conference you would like to attend. If we have enough interest, we will look into getting a bus to take us there and back.

You can refresh your knowledge on documentation by attending one of the classes being offered this month. Please attend and please continue to send in your stats every month!

Thank you for all that you do for your congregations!

Bone Density Screening

A strong draw for a health fair is to offer bone density screenings. Like cholesterol it is guaranteed to have a line of people interested in receiving the service. My name is Lynn Gallagher and I am the Nurse Educator for the Carle Mobile. I wanted to take this opportunity to let you and the Parish Nurse program know that we have recently added a bone densitomiter to our screening devices. As always the Mobile Clinic staff is more than willing to provide screening at our local churches for free and we can now add osteoporosis screening to that service. We have in the past assisted many churches at health fairs and we would love to continue to provide our services at those kinds of programs. Contact Lynn at 383-3647
